What is social innovation?

Social innovation is the work of finding better answers to social and environmental problems — better meaning more effective, more durable, or fairer than what exists, with the benefit going to society rather than to whoever built it.

In practice it spans five layers, from the knowledge underneath the work to establishing whether anything changed.
